The first body I saw was in Gentilly.

Someone spray-painted an arrow on a nearby wall pointing to the left. Above the arrow they wrote in large block letters, "Body Here."

I didn't see him at first. Mud and debris covered the streets. Everything was brown and misshapen.

I pulled my car to the opposite side of the road and parked. I didn't immediately get out. I sat in the desolation and devastation of what was once Gentilly ...

Time eventually slows to a crawl in New Orleans.

Until there are no days or weeks or months—just one long unavoidable experience.

Day and night lose all meaning.

Dawn and dusk become one.

Noon is the same as midnight and dreams become interchangeable with our waking experiences.

Sometimes it's impossible to verbalize the difference between love and hate and what side everyone is on—enemy or friend, lover or stranger.

I no longer ...

I caught a glimpse of a school bus on fire the other day while I was on my way to work.

I slowed down and drifted to the side of the road. I snatched my Minolta D-50 from the backseat, rolled down the window and aimed.

The cops and firefighters hadn't arrived yet so it was all random and uncontrolled hysteria. There was no one there to tell them that everything was going to be ok. No one with heavy blankets and anti-fire pamphlets ...

Another Friday night rolled around and the good-time kiddies of New Orleans were out doing what they do best, shooting and drinking and snorting and dropping drawers in half-closed bathroom stalls, making love with strangers who may or may not have been the same faces they faced in that same stall the previous weekend or the kin they traded presents with 15 years ago, under the soft glow of common relatives' Christmas trees.

You just ...

By Richard A. Webster

These are the days of the Treme, loose pit bulls ripping out the throats of old, porch-sittin' men after feasting on the ears of innocent girls playing hopscotch on the chalk, body-outlines crisscrossing these neighborhood streets.

It's all true.

I swear.

It happened a few weeks ago, just a few blocks from my apartment. A pair of pits ran rampant and ran blood from the bodies of an elderly man and a prepubescent girl.

The man died.

Temporary madness. That is our addiction.

Not booze, not blow or smack or speed or weed.

Temporary madness. That's what we're all after.

Give me 18 hours in the tank with the titans of loose limbs and reduced brain stems, fluttering in the Mississippi River wind as the fat lady on the ferry pumps the gas keys of the organ, unfurling her ribbons of carousel sounds throughout the Quarter streets.

How are we supposed to pretend ...

Debra Reed lives under the Interstate-10 overpass on Claiborne Avenue and Canal Street. She is short and 54-years old but I don't hold that against her.

My mom is short. She's also older than 54. I'm not sure how much older, but old enough.

The point is that I don't discriminate against short, old women.

Unless they try to touch me in unnatural ways.

I'm an inveterate and unapologetic drunk but I have my limits.

I seem ...

By Richard A. Webster

Let's look at this realistically.

If you happen to be roaming the Riverwalk at night because you have nothing better to do, because you fear sitting at home with shit all to do except listen to the incessant screeching of your inner thoughts, because you hate television and being alone, but you can't stand the thought of being around other people, and while you're walking down the Riverwalk where packs of gutterpunks and train-hoppers ...
